Recently during the week of 3/11-3/15 Wilson has decided to take extra precautionary measures to keep students safe because of a recent incident. The precautionary measures included checking every student’s ID one by one as they walked into school which in return caused the wait to get into school to be delayed because it had created lines.
Many students didn’t know what had caused the extra safety measures to be put into action so they believed they were being inconvenienced for no reason as it interfered with getting to their classes on time. There are different perspectives that some may believe it was the best course of action or believe we could’ve handled it a different way
Jonathan Evans, one of the school counselors for the arts pathway stated “I think the question is what’s more important: the school ensuring safety or everyone’s convenience. In the past we’ve had many people sneak in who aren’t Wilson students even though I believe there are many people who are here just to get to their classes.”
“From what I understand students didn’t know ahead of time that they’d be checked for IDs so I believe getting an email would’ve been more beneficial to get people prepared for the wait,” said Alexis Harcharic, a psychology teacher here at Wilson.
“We’re waiting in those long lines for ten to fifteen minutes and most of us just want to get to class so it creates a lot of frustration between students and staff. Checking student IDs was a good idea in my opinion although if it had been handled it a different way such as using more than one door as an entrance it would’ve been a completely different situation,” said by senior in the LPS pathway, Andrew Renteria.
In the end the safety of Wilson students is one of the most important priorities that the staff and administration have here on campus. They will always try to keep students best interest at heart especially, when it comes to being safe rather than sorry.
