Bruins International is a club that welcomes multilingual students and provides resources as a safe space. Their goal is to connect multilingual learners with peers and resources on campus, according to their Instagram account.
Senior Francis Rodriguez in the Performing Arts Pathway, Leader of Bruins International, dijo: “Yo siento que tenemos varias ventajas y varias desventajas pero ha tenido un impacto bueno”. Several Multilingual Students come from a different country which has a big impact on their education and their experience since it is a completely new experience for them and a new language for them to learn and get used to.
President of the Multilingual Club, Vivían Ruan, Senior in the Leadership and Public Service Pathway, said, “Todos tenemos nuestros propios procesos para seguir adelante y no tenemos que culparnos si unos van antes que otros, cada quien tiene su ritmo de ir aprendiendo”.
On Friday, December 15th, Ms.Givens from the college and career center went in to talk about FAFSA and what the college and career center has to offer. Ms.Givens also shared with students her experience as a child and how she would get judged for being a multilingual student. Ms.Givens sharing her experience really showed students on how they aren’t the only ones going through these experiences and how it will eventually get better but everything takes time.
Senior Ximena Sanchez in the Performing Arts pathway, said “Yo siento que ser estudiante multilingüe tiene muchos beneficios y muchas desventajas pero yo sigo aprendiendo el inglés”. Students who were initially shy about speaking a new language gained confidence and found their voice. They discovered that language was not just a tool for communication, but a way to connect with others on a deeper level.
In the end, Bruin International is becoming a symbol of harmony and friendship. It shows that language barriers could be overcome, and that embracing different cultures could bring people closer together. The impact of this multilingual club is going to reach far beyond the high school years, as the friendships are going to last a lifetime.
