“Whats your favorite scary movie?”

Long Beach, CA- Horror movies have been around for over a century, the debut of the horror genre came with Le Manoir du Diable (1896). Halloween is a perfect time to enjoy classic horror movies, such as The Evil Dead (1981), and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). These films have set the bar for what is considered a good horror movie. Since COVID-19 is still an important issue, it is recommended that Halloween should be celebrated at home. Students shared their personal favorites that could be the next pick for a horrifying movie night.

Junior Dayana Araujo’s favorite horror movie is Halloween (2018), which is a sequel to the 1978 blockbuster by the same name. Halloween tells the story of Laurie Strode, a survivor of the first killing spree committed 40 years ago by none other than Michael Myers otherwise known as The Shape. Michael is able to escape the institution he was locked up in during a bus transfer that goes haywire. He is dedicated to finding Laurie and finishing what he started, the only difference is that she’s ready for him this time. “It’s a thriller movie, it has suspense. It has me on my feet,” said Araujo.

Some students prefer supernatural thrillers. Senior Isidro Godoy, says his favorite horror movie is Insidious Chapter 2 (2013). This movie is the second installment in the beloved horror series written by Leigh Whannell that debuted in 2010. Following the events of the first movie, Dalton Lambert is no longer possessed after a lengthy battle with the evil spirits, however the same could not be said for his father, Josh Lambert. With the help of Josh’s wife Renai, Josh’s mother Lorraine and her ghost-hunting crew, they must rid Josh of the evil entity who is inhabiting his body. “I like the plot,” Godoy said, “There’s a storyline and it’s pretty scary.”

Others prefer the classics. They can resonate with one, like Junior Gabbie Dee, who was born on a Friday the 13th. Dee’s favorite horror movie is fittingly Friday the 13th (1980). The movie follows a group of teenage camp counselors that are attempting to restore and re-open an old summer camp with a history of murder. They soon find themselves getting stalked and butchered by an unmerciful, and unknown killer. “I love Jason and his mask,” Dee said.
