Wilson’s boys and girls tennis is working through their season with new coach, Mr. Medina. Coach Medina is entering his first year as girls tennis coach and second year for the boys. Raised in Long Beach and the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee Coach Medina aspired to be a teacher and musician from a young age. He admits that while growing up, he played just about every sport but focused on baseball, football and especially tennis. He could easily be considered a “jack of all trades” when it comes to the field sports.

His love for tennis as a child inspired him to coach, “I wanted to become a coach because I knew the positive impact that all my past coaches have had on my life, and I wanted to be a part of that. Also, I love tennis!” said Coach Medina through email.

Along with being a committed coach, Medina contributes off the court by teaching English in Wilson’s Arts Pathway. Previous tennis coach and current art teacher Ms. McBride stated, “He emanates good, positive energy, and he has his own ideas about what he expects from his athletes.” On the court, Junior Isabella Wooden describes Coach Medina’s coaching technique as individual and accommodating, He definitely seems to understand that everyone is different and has separate things they need to focus on.” said Isabella.

With the cancellation of all sports last year due to COVID-19 Coach Medina and girls varsity tennis did not let that get in the way of their 2021 Moore League win. With a powerful start in their season, Girls Varsity Tennis was indestructible and went a total of ten wins and no losses and took home the first Moore League title since 2013 against Long Beach Poly with a score of 10-8.

When asked how Coach Medina felt winning his first Moore League win as first year girls tennis coach he stated, “It feels good to see all the hard work that the girls put in payoff, they earned it,” While still learning how to manage the team he has learned new skills that will be incorporated into the following seasons.

A new addition to Wilson’s sports, Coach Medina’s ambition for Wilson’s tennis program is respected by parents, teachers and players. Wilson is honored to have Coach Medina representing the tennis program. In hopes for another Moore League win, tennis will be working tirelessly to bring home the title for the years to come.
