LONG BEACH, CA- On Friday, October 6th, 2023, Woodrow Wilson High School students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by wearing soccer jerseys all day. The students embraced their appreciation for this heritage by rocking a variety of jerseys, from the Mexican National Team jerseys to specific team uniforms.
Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States. It is significant because it recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
Sophomore Ivan Duarte supported this spirit day by wearing a Club America jersey, a soccer team from Mexico City. When asked why this jersey is important to him, he expressed his support for Club America. “Well, I’m wearing it because today they play a match and I want to support them. I always wear their jersey.” This gives students a chance to show support and passion for a team or sport that they love. For others, this is a day where they express their love for their country and is a way to show where they came from and to represent their country/culture.
Junior Matthew Ruiz wore the Peruvian National Team Jersey. “Well, I gotta represent my country,” said Matthew when asked about the significance of this jersey. In addition, Sophomore Steve Gonzalez had similar ideas in mind. “My country is cool and I want to represent where I come from,” he said about his Mexico National Team Jersey.
Wilson High School will continue to have spirit days for Hispanic Heritage Month until the 15th which will allow for kids to showcase their culture and where they come from. This is a great bonding moment for the school and is something where students, faculty, and teachers can all come together and celebrate.
