Long Beach, Ca – The 2024 spring musical for Wilson is “GREASE”!
It’s safe to assume that most who come to Woodrow Wilson High School have no knowledge of a yearly tradition that the Wilson musical theater program does every year. So, with that in mind here’s a quick and brief explanation.
Every year, Curtis Heard, the musical theater teacher, rolls out a board with about ten potential musicals on it. This year, the board contained musicals such as ”The Little Mermaid,” ”Mean Girls,” “Grease,” Anastasia,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and many more. From there on, whenever students have that particular class, he takes one down until two are left.
By the end of class on October 4th, 2024, two musicals, “Grease“ and “Shrek, “were left. From what I concluded from the students I interviewed, the majority of people wanted to put on “Grease” this year.
One reason why came from Ruby Leon, who stated that the reason she would prefer to do “Grease” this year is “it’s a show I’ve wanted to do since I was a child, and I think it would be an amazing experience, especially since I’m new to Wilson and this would be my first musical in this program.” Another student, Mekenzie Reid, added that she wanted to do “Grease” this year because “I love that movie very much and I think it would be a fun show to do.”
But of course, not all students wanted to do “Grease.” Michael Alvarez added that they would prefer to do “Shrek” instead because “I find the characters way more interesting than the ones for “Grease “. I also think it would be way more fun to do”
However, in an odd turn of events, instead of finding out the musical next class, we ended up finding out almost two weeks later. Heard stated that the reason was that it was difficult to win the rights. But on October 22, the musical for this year was finally revealed.
