LONG BEACH CA- On March 29th, Wilson High School hosted the annual Klaus Barth Invitational. Throughout the night, they not only fought for a win in individual races but also for special trophies for the best swimmer overall team wins, and much more.
The night was a special one to Wilson; it is used as a mid-season check to see what they’re improving on and what they need to keep working on. Coach D’sa said, “It was looking promising towards the night’s end. This was a great chance to see what other teams have.” After the meet everyone was excited for good reason, Varsity girls and JV boys both took home wins for Wilson and Wilson won the overall meet. Varsity swimmer senior Sammie Hamilton even took home swimmer of the meet for the girls and sophomore Keegan Abing took home swimmer of the meet for JV boys.
This night was one of the best meets of the season for swimmers. Music was played constantly by Wilson’s coaches Nezzy and Zach, the pool was much bigger than typically used, and the crowd was much bigger with spectators from four schools coming out to support their team. The meet was also on the first Friday of spring break meaning swimmers didn’t have school. The meet was later which was Wilson Wave Junior Jake Jordan’s favorite part of the meet, other than the three personal records (PRs) he set that night.
This team has shown incredible growth from last year. Bio-Med Junior Noah Smith said, “Everyone tried their best and there was a lot more hype than normal at swim meets.” Team camaraderie is something this team has worked on all season and it looks to be paying off for them. Jordan even commented on the current senior leadership this season saying “The seniors have stepped up, especially at practices.”
The team is looking forward to prelims and finals on April 23rd and 25th.
