LONG BEACH CA- On February 27th, the Wilson Bruins took on Los Al in multiple sports on campus, including swimming. The Bruins took on the Griffins from 3 to 7 pm ending in an overall win for the Griffins.
Throughout the night both teams fought to come out on top in each race. The girls started the night with the Frosh/Soph 200 Yard Medley Relay where Wilson came in first and second place. The boys ended it with the Varsity 400 Yard Freestyle Relay where Wilson placed second, third, and fifth.
This season means a lot to the team, whose last year was the first season in 50 years Wilson lost Moore League and Coach D’Sa said he hopes “to get back to winning Moore League. It’s a bummer to have lost [last season] every year we reset and every year we have the same expectation to win.” D’Sa wants this season to be a team effort.
There is already a big change in the team’s mentality from last season, shown throughout the night as swimmers cheered each other on. This is an improvement from last year according to both D’Sa and swimmer Wyatt Mitchell who said, “it’s not an individual sport” and that the team is working on “having each other’s back and working hard as a team.”
Everyone has the same goal this year: win the Moore League. Swimmer Eli Vince plans to reach this goal by “[Being] here every morning early, grinding you know this is the hardest I’ve ever worked. This sport right here, with these guys, we work so hard every day. By the end, it’s all going to pay off.” D’Sa also said something similar about a pain bank the team has, putting in early mornings and hard work so that they can “collect at the end.”
