LONG BEACH, CA- On Thursday October 19, African Ambassadors held their second meeting of the year; it is a new club in the subcategory of the established Young Black Scholars club. Members of all backgrounds are welcome, regardless if they have roots in Africa or not.
Their goal is connecting young black students to their African roots, but also teaching the student body about all of the cultures and traditions that come from the continent. “I love seeing our community come together and being around people who have the same experience as me,” stated Maya James, a senior in the visual arts pathway.
Jerell Foster, a senior in the BioMed pathway, stated, “I feel like it’s a really safe place for a lot of black students to come together while bringing a more in depth outlook on our roots”.
Mr.Osae-Brown is a special education teacher at Wilson and also the creator of the African ambassadors club.“ It’s so unique to be an African and especially an African American I just felt that we need to know our culture and identities while embracing the culture that Africans have.YBS is more concentrated on the educational aspect of our background while African Ambassadors is meant to be almost solely focused on the cultural aspect” Brown said.
African Ambassadors are preparing many events in the future including potlucks, dance shows and even a movie night. Every club meeting is built on bringing not only the black community together but our entire student body for the same purpose of spreading our cultures.
