LONG BEACH, CA- Emotional moments and excitement were on display in the morning for Bruins. As Wilson Bruins walked into the school, mariachis were seen and heard, which made for a memorable experience.
Bruins and staff members were dressed with beautiful flag colors and makeup. The student dancers were dressed in amazing culture dresses as part of their culture.People cheering a big crowd was amazing to students and families to see.
The energy of the crowd was immaculate, seeing bruins with their friends showing off their culture dances and seeing teachers and staff have fun and express themselves.Brave bruins went up on stage to dance and show everyone their skills on dancing. Freshman Angel Ortiz went up on stage to sing a wonderful song. What made him choose that song was the heartwarming feeling connection he had with the song through memories. The crowd was cheering for Ortiz with many singing along and dancing and admiring the moment.
“I just liked singing from a young age. I heard there was a mariachi [and] I wanted them to do a song and they wanted me to sing with them so I did,” said Ortiz. “That song I’ve known since I was born. My dad taught it to me and my brother.”
Seeing how many hispanic bruins there made it heartwarming for the audience knowing there were many students that are not afraid to show off their culture.
“This month is important because it celebrates the culture of our students and you know it shows the diversity that latinos/latinas/Latina bring to The US” stated Alondra Brirrueta, a Spanish teacher at Wilson.
“I feel like this means that our diversity is celebrated and you know as a Mexican American I feel like our roots are important to be shared with others” said Brirrueta.
“It means to celebrate the cultures of hispanics. All my family has done so much for me and has done so many great things” said Estrella Martin del Campo, a student in grade 9th. Bruins have backstories and can find many people with similarities.
The event was wholesome and a wonderful experience. Not only were students having fun but also staff members. The mariachis played exciting songs that they knew by heart.
As said by many students and teachers this event was celebratory and fun to watch. From mariachis singing while students and staff dressed in their cultural outfits and danced in the morning before class.
